February 28th Experience Letter sent to all parents of kindergarten students at Ashlawn Elementary School
Arlington School District

February 22, 2019

Dear families,

We have an experience for your child next week that we wanted to share with you! As you know, we strive to cultivate Global Citizens at Ashlawn – a person who accepts all people, works for peace, protects the environment, and helps those in need. This up-coming experience focuses on our tenant of accepting all people.

February 28th is Jazz & Friends National Day of School and Community Readings which is cosponsored by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s (HRC) Welcoming Schools program and the National Education Association (NEA). This day is an opportunity for children to read the book, I Am Jazz, a book co-written by transgender youth Jazz Jennings.  This book is already on the APS list of resources for elementary students and is appropriate for ages 4 and up.

We will have the president of the NEA Lily Eskelsen Garcia and the National Press Secretary of the HRC, Sarah McBride, as guest readers in the classroom.  Students will have a read aloud of I am Jazz and if time permits, Julian is a Mermaid. There will be discussion around the big ideas of the books which are we want to accept and welcome all people.

Due to the short timing of all of this coming together, only the students in Mr. Foster and Ms. Fischer will be participating in this experience. Should you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Sincerely,
