The statement, as released moments ago, by former Virginia Governor and United States Senator George Allen as to why he will not seek the governorship in 2009: For Immediate Release: January 8, 2008

Statement from former Governor George Allen

Alexandria, Virginia - Former Governor and U.S. Senator George Allen issued the following statement regarding the 2009 Governor's race:

"Throughout 2007, and increasingly in recent months, Susan and I have heard from many wonderful Virginians who have encouraged us to seek the governorship in 2009 and have generously offered their help. We are deeply thankful for those expressions of support. Having learned from past experiences, to allow such speculation to linger would be unwise and unfair when an honest statement of intentions is the right way to conduct one's life.

"Susan and I have prayerfully and deliberately considered how we can best serve Virginians and advance our ideals at this stage in the life of our family. We will always fondly recall our time in the Governor's Mansion as an unparalleled honor and a period of historic initiatives and transformational accomplishments for Virginians. Yet, as we look forward, we are excited about other significant ways we can serve and contribute outside of elected office. Therefore, I will not be a candidate for Governor in 2009.

"Susan and I wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have supported and encouraged us. I remain intensely interested in the future of our Commonwealth, and will continue to advocate for ideas, issues, solutions and candidates that I believe are essential for us to effectively compete and succeed. Republican leadership in our State has initiated far-reaching positive changes and we have joined with forward-thinking people from across party lines to make Virginia a better place to live, work, learn and raise a family. I am pleased to have been able to be a part of that progress.

"In the future, I will continue to advance key goals that I believe are essential for us to be a land of opportunity for all: quality education with accountability; affordable, reliable American energy; safe and secure communities; embracing the advances in innovation for competitiveness, economic development and job creation. And, I remain standing strong, championing the cause of freedom so that someday all the people of the world may be blessed as we are to live in a country that respects freedom of religion and expression, with their God-given rights protected under the rule of law."
