Yesterday, Virginia House Republicans called on Governor Terry McAuliffe to investigate Planned Parenthood abortion centers in the Commonwealth to make sure that they aren’t harvesting for profit the body parts of the unborn children they abort. You can read the full press release here. We are pleased to see the strong statements by pro-life leaders.
The response of Governor McAuliffe’s administration was remarkable. According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, “McAuliffe spokesman Brian Coy said in an email that the governor, a Democrat, was ‘disturbed’ by the content of the video in question…. ‘Every Virginia women’s health center is licensed and regulated by the Virginia Department of Health and subject to regular and thorough inspections to ensure that they are in full compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations,’ Coy said. ‘The governor is confident that any violation of those laws and regulations will be reported and appropriate action taken.’”
Yes, you read that correctly. It is astonishingly hypocritical that Governor McAuliffe is claiming the Department of Health will ensure Planned Parenthood’s abortion centers are following the law through the enforcement of the very abortion center safety standards he has done everything in his power to eliminate! Since coming to office and promising to be a “brick wall” against abortion center safety standards, he has appointed a former member of Planned Parenthood’s board of directors and others to the Virginia Board of Health with the express purpose of undermining Virginia’s abortion center safety standards.
Already, inspections of abortion centers in Virginia have found numerous violations of state laws, including parental consent, but his administration has done nothing. Abortion centers in several cities have failed to meet federal and state drug laws – violations that would in any other medical practice bring loss of medical licenses, fines, and other penalties. But in Virginia, if it’s the abortion industry violating the law under this administration, nothing is done. The idea that this administration and the Department of Health will hold Planned Parenthood or any other abortion center accountable is a joke.
Twenty-four hours after the video of Planned Parenthood executives callously discussing over lunch the destruction of unborn babies and the sale of their organs – late term babies that likely can survive outside the womb – Planned Parenthood was on the defensive, and the mainstream media was carrying their talking points. Recognizing that her $1 billion organization had taken a PR hit, Cecile Richards “apologized” for the “tone” of the lunch discussion, while also denying that Planned Parenthood profits from the sale of body parts of the babies they destroy. Yet, the video clearly shows the Planned Parenthood executive talking about how abortion centers can “more than break even” by selling these parts.
And while the “tone” is indeed disgusting, the dismantling of precious and defenseless unborn children and selling their organs is simply inhuman. For that, Cecile Richards offers no apology. It’s also interesting to note that the Planned Parenthood executive discusses how she uses ultrasound to make sure she positions the unborn child properly so she can get to the body parts easier. So, after going into hysterics over being required to use ultrasound to protect women’s health, it turns out the abortion industry is perfectly comfortable with using it to destroy unborn children more lucratively.
I encourage you to read this great article on the media’s failure to cover this scandal accurately. More importantly, the piece will arm you with facts about the video and answers to the abortion center’s distortions that you can use in your conversations with people about the video.
Regardless of one’s position on abortion itself, the video released this week is disturbing. And while it again revealed the reality of the abortion industry and its profit driven contempt for human life in particular, more importantly, people are being forced to recognize the reality of the value of the child being destroyed.
