Freedom of Choice Act

Family Foundation Pastors' Day At The Capitol

This Thursday is the official lobby day for Planned Parenthood. If history repeats itself, this leading provider of abortion will bring hundreds of people to the capitol to ask our law makers to turn a blind eye to the abortion industry. They will say the following:

» Abortion is a birth control option that should be exercised as one sees fit.

» Drugs, such as emergency contraception, that have the potential to take a human life from conception, should be made more readily available — even to teenage girls.

» Legislation to encourage women to have the opportunity to see an ultrasound prior to making their decision regarding abortion, parenting or adoption is a form of coercion.

The Family Foundation counters these untruths with truth. We do this through a number of ways, especially by engaging grassroots citizen activists — for example, through our Lobby Day at the Capitol and our new Virtual Lobby Day. Now, we also are engaging pastors, encouraging them to counter untruth with prayer and presence. Thus, we are countering Planned Parenthood's lobby day not only with our virtual lobby day (click here to learn how to participate), but with a Pastors Lobby Day. These dozens of pastors will make a big impact and be a significant contrast to the pro-abortion types patrolling the General Assembly Building's halls on February 5.

Here's some of the pastors' agenda Thursday:

Nicknamed the "Committee of Death," they will attend the Senate Education and Health Committee, which reviews all bills relating to pregnancy and abortion. Nearly every time a pro-life bill has been brought to this committee in the last decade has been defeated, refusing to recognize the sanctity of human life.

Pastors also will get an update from the patrons of positive life restoring measures introduced this session of the Virginia General Assembly.

In addition, Bill Haywood, of Abingdon Church of Christ, also will speak. He has taken it upon himself to organize pastors in his region to defeat the Freedom of Choice Act, a federal measure that will undo nearly all laws in Virginia that protect children who seek abortions and women who might be taken advantage of in a difficult situation.

One of the six state police chaplains who resigned when he was ordered by the Kaine administration to not pray "in Jesus name" also will speak. Pastors and lay people have rallied behind these brave chaplains and we want  everyone to continue to be engaged on this issue as we challenge the administration's decision through corrective legislation. To cap off the day, the pastors will meet with legislators in the afternoon.

If you are a pastor who is interested, or if you think your pastor is interested, it is not too late to register. Call Suzanne at (804) 343-0010 or e-mail John Smith at john@familyfoundation.org.

Prophetic Article? A Must Read To Understand The Future

A Barack Obama presidency has me scared for a long time for a number of reasons. There's the pending economic socialism and the disregard for innocent human life, among many urgent issues. During the campaign the many to whom I expressed my concern would respond with the conventional wisdom that he'll mess it up and the country will swing back to conservatism in the mid-term elections, as in 1994. (That's a big "if," predicated on whether the so-called conservatives in Congress remain scared of their own shadows and remain addicted to "big-government conservatism.")  I would reply to those who responded that way, "Not so fast." Conventional wisdom and the old models don't apply anymore. With such large majorities in Congress and control of the White House, the extreme, Angry Left will ram through several initiatives to permanently seal its institutional advantages. For example, the liberal media, which crossed from only being biased to all out left wing advocacy this campaign, will be cemented by the passing of the so-called Fairness Doctrine, minimizing (if not completely eliminating) conservative talk radio. Advantage, Left Wing Media.

How about the so-called Freedom of Choice Act? Senator Obama said it's the first bill he would sign. It would eliminate all state restrictions on abortion. (No need for state legislatures, then, huh?) Gone would be all parental consent, notification and regulations against partial birth abortion. Advantage, the government grant and profit machine known as Planned Parenthood (see LifeSiteNews.com, here).

The union card check bill, if it becomes law (see The Las Vegas Sun, here), will end the secret ballot in union organizing campaigns. This will create countless new union shops. Aside from the economic peril of making American industry less competitive, this bill will add tens of thousands of new union members to union rolls — along with their compulsary dues, which go to union political action committees and used to elect leftist candidates. Advantage, corrupt Leftist union bosses.

The public education establishment, which largely dumbs down children K-12, and the college education establishment, which largely indoctrinates them because, by then, students have been conditioned to feel rather than think, will get new, large amounts of federal grants to run their politically correct campus societies, further preaching liberal doctrine under the guise of teaching, both in the classroom and in campus regulations such as speech codes. Advantage, Leftist educrats and teachers union leaders.

I could go on. But someone else has for me. Give me one more minute.

When I extolled this theory, some saw credence. Some thought the conventional wisdom would magically re-write history in two years. Many thought I was looking for the man on the grassy knoll. My response was that I would write a thesis on it. End of minute. I don't have to write the thesis. Quin Hillyer, of The American Spectator, has. I don't know whether to celebrate that my theory has been vindicated or mad that I didn't publish it and get compensated for the idea first. Regardless, Hillyer's "Saul Alinsky Takes the White House" (click here) is a must read to understand what Christian conservatives and those who believe in traditional family values and limited constitutional government will face starting January 20, 2009. It is something we need to be prepared for and ready to work against — work very hard against.

Here's an excerpt:

Watch what Michael Barone called the Obama "thugocracy" use the Justice Department to stifle dissent. Anybody who complains about vote fraud will be charged with "vote suppression." Anybody who complains about DoJ's actions will be charged with interfering with an investigation. Anybody who denies having interfered will be charged with perjury. Likewise, anybody who peacefully protests abortion clinics or the use of state-sponsored racial quotas will be charged with a civil rights violation. And the accused won't be able to look to the Supreme Court for help: Anthony Kennedy's "evolving standards" of justice will evolve to match the new zeitgeist, providing a 5-4 majority for the administration. Meanwhile, of course, Obama's other appointments will be filling up the rest of the judiciary at a rapid clip, with nobody able to stop them.

Other ways the Obama axis will tilt the playing field: "card check" legislation to eliminate secret ballots in unionizing and to force union victories in contract negotiations. Provision after provision giving favors to the trial bar so it can sue enemies into submission. Copious new regulations, especially environmental, to be used selectively to ensnare other conservative malcontents. Invasive IRS audits of conservative think tanks, other conservative 501 organizations, and PACs.

What Ohio officials did in rifling through so many of Joe Wurzelbacher's files will serve as ample precedent. (Just watch, by the way: Nobody ever will be effectively disciplined for the violation of Wurzelbacher's rights.)

And, only when the time is right and the ground (or air) has been well prepared, will come the grand-daddy of all fights, the re-enactment of the misnamed "Fairness Doctrine."

It's not just Joe the Plumber. Remember Barbara West, the Florida anchor who dared asked Joe Biden tough questions? Her station was blacklisted. Three newspapers who endorsed John McCain had their political reporters thrown off the Obama press plane (see The Washington Times, here). That's before he was elected! But surely there are bigger fish to fry — perhaps IRS and government intimidation of churches and pastors? By the way, what's with the 250,000 member security force Senator Obama promised? (See Blue Collar Muse, here.)

The coming socialist, one-party state only will be a crazy conspiracy theory if people fully understand what's at stake and decide to get engaged, stay vigilant, remain active and work hard. Work very hard — starting now.

"The First Thing I'd Do Is Sign FOCA"

Those were Barack Obama's words to Planned Parenthood leaders. Not the eloquent, oblique style he normally utters. It's blunt, which is appropriate for the horror thatis FOCA. Why is his statement so important? FOCA is the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" sponsored by some of the extreme left wing's most radical members of Congress. Orwellian as it sounds, it's not about freedom or choice (see our commentary here). In fact, it would nullify every state regulation of abortion the courts have upheld, including parental notification and consent laws, and partial birth abortion laws (see a print ad/open letter to Senator Obama from Americans United for Life, here).   With that in mind, here's a video similar to the Catholic Vote video that has received rave reviews nationally that we've posted here before (see here). This new one is an all-inclussive Christian video and includes a great archival photo of Billy Graham and President Ronald Reagan among other new scenes. It runs about 3:30. (Also see this video on why Christians should vote.) Please forward this link to all you think should see this inspiring, moving artistry to inform their conscience about Tuesday's election:

An Open Letter To Senator Obama

Americans United for Life Action this week bought a full-page advertisement in Ohio newspapers. The ad is an open letter to Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama. It asks him:

Why Do You Oppose Parental Involvement Laws That Protect Our Children From Sexual Abuse?

The letter documents the well-known case of a 14-year-old Cincinnati girl impregnated by a 21 year-old. She went to Planned Parenthood to get an abortion. But in Ohio, parents of minors seeking an abortion must be notified. The girl gave Planned Parenthood the 21-year-old's phone number. Planned Parenthood called the number, got dubious verbal permission from him without any verification as to whether he was really a parent, and performed the abortion. For parting gifts for her business, she was given a bag of condoms and a Depo-Provera shot. (The plot eventually was given up and the boy was convicted on seven counts of sexual battery and sentenced to three years in prison.)

What's this have to do with Senator Obama? He supports FOCA, the so-called Freedom of Choice Act (read here) which would nullify the parental notification or consent laws in 36 states (including those in Virginia) and all laws regulating abortion, laws of which 80 percent of Americans approve. FOCA is a radical bill certain to become law under a radical leftist Congress and White House.

We applaud Americans United for Life Action for its work to block FOCA and urge our readers to view its blog (www.fightfoca.com) which we have added to our blog roll. Please read its open letter to Senator Obama (click here) and see what you can do to help AUL Action, such as sign its Block FOCA Petition. If there is enough interest, it may run the ad in Virginia as well. (To see the letter in its advertisement format, click here.)

We also are thankful for work of its sister organization, Americans United for Life — a nonprofit, public-interest, pro-life, legal and public policy organization that fights abortion in the courts and in legislatures.

Freedom Of Choice Act Involves Neither Freedom Or Choice

The so-called Freedom of Choice Act again is before Congress. This dangerous legislation, called FOCA, would eliminate hundreds of pro-life laws and policies in every state as well as those in federal law. (Read the bills' summaries and status, sponsors, and other information, by clicking the bill numbers: The Senate bill number is S. 1173; the House bill number is H.R. 1964).

By imposing federal oversight on the states, this legislation would take away your rights to influence your state lawmakers to pass pro-life legislation by making Congress the only and ultimate authority on these critical issues. Hence, the Orwellian misnomer: It neither guarantees freedom or choice. Most assuredly, it limits representative democracy. This again reveals the shaky ground radical pro-abortion forces are on: If Americans overwhelmingly favor abortion on demand, as they claim, why are they afraid of letting citizen legislators and state electorates make those decisions? What's next, Congress deciding what doctors we can visit? (On second thought, don't ask.)

We highly encourage you to contact your U.S. Representative (click here for list) and Virginia's two U.S. Senators (Jim Webb, here, and John Warner, here) and urge them to defeat these bills. The National Committee for a Human Life Amendment has a good briefing sheet on the bills (click here). Because of the seriousness of this threat to innocent life and our freedoms — for example, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops calls it "a grave concern" — please forward the information on this blog to as many pro-lifers as you can.

Many thanks to the Virginia Catholic Conference for its work in alerting thousands of Virginians to the dangers to these bills.

More On Life From Nat Hentoff

As we posted last week, liberal and pro-life columnist Nat Hentoff wrote an insightful column about liberal politicians' pro-abortion views. That column ("Democrats and abortion") is very well worth the read (click here). This week, he's followed up with another brilliant piece ("Abortion wars crescendo")  which we cannot  recommend highly enough for you to read as well (click here). In it, Hentoff highlights some astounding — and very unfortunate — shifts in the Democrats' national platform. In a telling sign of just how far left those who controlled the levers of power at its convention are, the party even eliminated the Bill Clinton abortion platform plank of "safe, legal and rare." (Wonder if Hillary would've left that in?)

It also is "strongly and unequivocally" supportive of Roe v. Wade and opposes  any attempts to "weaken or undermine it." (Which shows more than a sad policy position. It shows weakness and hypocrisy at best, and ignorance at worst. Most liberals think an overturn of Roe would ban abortions. It would not. It would return the decisions to the states. If the country is so supportive of abortion on demand, what are pro-aborts afraid of? A little democracy? Why so afraid of a little voting here and there?)

Here are some other jaw droppers from Hentoff:

» Barack Obama is a co-sponsor of the "Freedom of Choice Act" that would make partial-birth abortion legal, contrary to a Supreme Court decision. (Why is it okay for pro-aborts to try to change a Supreme Court decision, but not for pro-lifers?)

» For you libertarians who don't think abortion is an issue, Obama is leading the way repeal the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion. (Joe Biden also supports taxpayer funding of abortion despite what he said to Tom Brokow per his September 7 Meet The Press interview. Click here for the record. In fact, Hentoff notes from The Nation, that Biden has a perfect 100 percent rating from Planned Parenthood.)

» Obama voted in the Illinois Senate to block a bill requiring the notification of at least one parent of a minor from another state seeking an abortion in Illinois.

» The well know fact, by now, that Obama voted to deny life-saving treatment to babies born despite surviving an abortion.

» Hentoff cites from an August 24 Washington Times editorial, "Planned Parenthood Targets Blacks," (read here) that one-third of all its abortions in 2007 were performed on blacks and a majority of its facilities are in minority neighborhoods.

Speaking of Planned Parenthood's apparent racial profiling, Hentoff ends by citing a black leader, a prominent Democrat, who once was fiercely eloquent in his defense of life. Until he, too, ran for president. Said this man several years ago:

"Don't let the pro-choicers convince you that a fetus isn't a human being. That's how the whites dehumanized us. ... The first step was to distort the image of us as human beings in order to justify that which they wanted to do and not even feel like they had done anything wrong."

That man is the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
