Breaking: First Amendment Violation At The CapitolNov 30, 2007
Within the last hour, starting around 5:00 p.m., there was a major constitutional breach of the First Amendment at the state capitol, and not just any breach. It was a clear violation of the separation of church and state!
Here's what happened: A crowd gathered to see Governor Tim Kaine and First Lady Anne Holton light the capitol Christmas Tree, as referred to by the governor himself. (That was the first sign of trouble. Isn't it supposed to be called a "Community Tree" . . . or something?) The lighting was scheduled for around 5:30. However, until it got sufficiently dark, and to entertain the crowd until then, a choir sang, but they didn't sing just any songs. They sang songs about Christmas and Jesus and His birth on state property! Actually singing that word and that name, and words like Lord and Savior! Even though no one appeared offended, why take a chance?
Who's calling the ACLU?
More to come.
