We Have School Choice!Nov 26, 2013
In 2011, lamenting the loss of a school choice bill, we wrote an e-mail to our supporters saying:
In fact, since the earliest days of this blog, we've written numerous times that education options for Virginia's parents and students eventually would come, despite the constant and even ludicrous roadblocks posed by the education establishment and government schools monopoly — made more ridiculous by the earnestness in which these opponents couched their preposterous arguments.
Now in 2013, after the 2012 passage of a school choice bill, we're pleased to say that tuition scholarship organizations are up and running, donations can be made to these organizations, and scholarships already have been handed out to eligible students. Because of generous donations, low-income students are actualizing their dreams of a quality education and are breaking free from the cycle of poverty.
This is an important initiative and, as such, it is critical that its opening year be successful. Would you join in making the goal of school choice a reality in Virginia? Would you be willing to make a tax-credit-eligible donation to one of the many scholarship organizations?
Maybe your child qualifies as eligible for a tuition scholarship. Would you partner by signing up your eligible child for scholarship consideration?
Maybe you are a school and you are able to partner by receiving these students with scholarships. To take part in any of these opportunities, visit vataxcreditscholarship.com for more information.
Already the Virginia Education Improvement Scholarship Tax Credit is making a difference. As of November 4, the Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy reports that more than $250,000 has been donated to qualifying Virginia scholarship organizations and nearly 150 low-income students have enrolled in schools using the resulting scholarships.
The program is a win-win for everyone involved — donors receive a tax credit, schools are able to reach students they otherwise would not have been able to reach, and most importantly, students are given a shot at a quality education they otherwise could not have afforded. As proven in other states, this law will allow certain students to escape failing government-run schools and, as with anything, the resulting competition will improve all schools. In the long run, that will benefit our communities with stable young adults contributing to our cities, towns and counties. If you haven't already done so, please visit vataxcreditscholarship.com and get involved today.
