The abortion industry in Virginia and its defenders like Governor Terry McAuliffe, Attorney General Mark Herring, the editorial page of the Richmond Times Dispatch and others, continues to deceive Virginians about the status of abortion centers in the Commonwealth by helping to cover up what’s really happening. Case in point is Dr. Steven Brigham, who operates two abortion centers in Virginia, and has ties to many others in other states.  Though in radically right wing states like New Jersey, he is being shut down because of his track record of horrific care for women. But in Virginia, his facility in Virginia Beach gets a “variance” from the Department of Health so it doesn’t have to meet critical safety standards.

Now comes word that for his New Jersey abortion centers, Brigham had a doctor on staff that was a convicted sex offender! Oh, and as a little side note, the doctor in question suffered “visible physical and mental impairment” from a stroke, but was still performing abortions.

Clearly, it’s all about women’s health.

Here in Virginia, we're not surprised by any of this.  We found earlier this year where he advertised for physicians at his facilities using phrases like “no experience necessary” and “lucrative opportunity.” The “no experience” line actually violates those mean-spirited and onerous abortion center health and safety standards:

12VAC5-412-190. Clinical staff.

Abortions shall be performed by physicians who are licensed to practice medicine in Virginia and who are qualified by training and experience to perform abortions. The abortion facility shall develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures to ensure and document that abortions that occur in the abortion facility are only performed by physicians who are qualified by training and experience. [emphasis added]

More than 400 health and safety violations later, eighteen abortion centers in Virginia continue to offer "lucrative opportunities" to doctors at the expense of women.
