Today, The Family Foundation, in conjunction with other Virginia pro-life organizations, held our Virginia Stands for Life Rally on the Capitol Lawn. Approximately 250 guests were in attendance to show their support for the pro-life cause and urge their legislators to vote for life in the 2016 General Assembly Session.

Our keynote speaker at the Rally was Abby Johnson, a former clinic director for Planned Parenthood. The day Johnson realized that abortion was a travesty against human life, she was assisting in an ultrasound guided abortion. She watched as the doctor moved the cannula into place, and watched as a 13 week gestation child vainly tried to escape from the harm coming toward it. It was then that she realized that this was a child, not a senseless “product of conception.” She resigned from Planned Parenthood that day and has been championing the pro-life cause across the country. Since that time, she has founded a ministry for employees of abortion centers who have left the business, wherein over 200 abortion clinic workers have gone through the program in just two years.  At today's rally, she revealed that six workers have recently left one abortion center in Virginia!

In her remarks to the crowd, Johnson recounted how the abortion behemoth used scare tactics and deception to recruit her, alleging things like, “If we make abortions illegal, then women will have to go back to back alley abortions.” Johnson said her experience as an abortion center operator led her to believe that abortion centers are no better than the back alleys, as observed by inspection reports and the lack of quality care inside abortion centers.

When Johnson was working for Planned Parenthood, she was told that the reason abortionists do not use ultrasounds to guide abortions is because it takes 3-5 minutes longer, and Planned Parenthood wants all of their abortions to be “on the table, abortion, off the table” in no more than 5 minutes total – more women, more abortions, more money. Johnson recounted a recent story of how one woman died, having bled to death from a perforated uterus after lying on the abortion table for five hours, before the abortion center called an ambulance.

Planned Parenthood claims that abortions only make up 1-3% of their business, and that the rest of the business is committed to other health matters (a claim proven misleading by even the left leaning PolitiFact). But Johnson shared that while Planned Parenthood can tell that a patient has an ailment, such as high blood pressure, they are not actually qualified to treat those ailments. Instead, they end up sending women to federally qualified health clinics to be treated. Of course, this has the tendency to cause women to be sent to numerous health facilities just to receive care for basic health needs.

Before the rally, many participants took part in our Fourth Annual Prayer Walk around capital square, praying for elected officials to make wise decisions, and many met with legislators arriving for the first day of session.
