Virginia News Stand: February 26, 2009Feb. 26, 2009
Lots of stuff going on, but let me draw your attention to two articles: An article by the Lynchburg News & Advance reports on a possible Republican pick-up in the 23rd House of Delegates seat this fall (currently held by Democrat Shannon Valentine), in part because of increased voter registration by Liberty University students. The reader discussion on the article's thread is pretty robust. The other article of note is the AP article about the Kansas abortion center case (see video here) first brought by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline (another video here), who our 2008 Gala keynote speaker. The trial judge refused the motion to dismiss the case made by lawyers for the abortion center.

Gala Recap: A Rousing SuccessNov. 22, 2008
Thursday night more than 600 pro-family Virginians attended The Family Foundation of Virginia's Annual Gala to hear a dynamic address by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline. He did not disappoint. Pacing the stage and speaking with passion, Kline urged an audience that included Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, Attorney General Bob McDonnell, Speaker of the House Bill Howell (R-28, Stafford), and several legislators and other elected officials, to continue to fight for enduring truth and for what is right and just regardless of the political consequences, because that is true leadership. He spoke of the breakdown of the rule of law in our nation because of the rejection of fundamental truth and mixed in personal stories from his battle with Planned Parenthood in Kansas, all of which energized the crowd. Because of his principled stands he became a target of Planned Parenthood, the media, the elites and the political establishment — first in his re-election campaign for attorney general, where he was defeated; then, most recently, for re-election as Johnson County District Attorney — this time in the form of a defeat to a Republican primary challenger.
Despite that, Kline continues to pursue the truth and bring justice for those who have suffered at the hands of Planned Parenthood clinics in Kansas. Speaking of the fight and retaliation against him by Planned Parenthood, the media, elitists and the political establishment simply for enforcing the law, he said, "They stole my name. They destroyed my reputation."
Also last evening, The Family Foundation was thrilled to present the 2008 Legislator of the Year Award to Virginia Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37, Centreville). Cuccinelli fought to defund Planned Parenthood in the 2008 General Assembly by introducing a budget amendment in the Senate. That fight shut down the Senate for over four hours while Republicans and Democrats fought within their own caucuses. Ultimately, the vote was a 20-20 tie with Lt. Governor Bolling casting the deciding vote in favor of the amendment. The budget amendment, unfortunately, was not included in the final budget.
Senator Cuccinelli has been an advocate for property rights, life, marriage and many other values in his time in the state Senate. We were pleased to be able to honor him.
Family Foundation President Victoria Cobb told the crowd that as we are on the heels of another dismal campaign season, we are once again hear the pundits, media elite and politicians — Republican and Democrat — declare that Virginia is no longer conservative and that the battle is over. But she said that while many of us are frustrated with the state of politics in Virginia, it is how we now respond to that frustration that is going to determine our future success.
She stressed that we cannot allow ourselves to wallow in pity or despair, and we must carry on; that those who claim our demise do not understand our values; that those who seek to silence us simply do not understand our faith; and that those who wish us to abandon the field do not understand our resolve. They do not understand that we will not stop.
Thank you to all of you who supported this year's gala as a patron, a sponsor, a volunteer or in any other way. It was a rousing success, and we are extremely grateful for your continued support and prayers!
A Big Thank You!Nov. 21, 2008
A big thank you to each and every one of the 600-plus who attended our Annual Gala last night: attendees, sponsors, volunteers, speakers, perfomers . . . everyone. You all have our sincerest, most heartfelt gratitude for all that you did to make last night a great success! We made it known that Phill Kline was not to be missed and he did not disappoint. There wasn't one person in the Greater Richmond Convention Center last night who wasn't genuinely inspired with his message of putting principle over politics, of what true leadership is, of allowing ourselves to be intolerant of injustice, especially injustice to the innocent-unborn; and the real characteristics of the in-fashion word "hope" (hint: you can't have hope without faith because hope is an expectation of something good yet to come, which is . . . faith).
For those not able to attend as well as who did and want to re-live the event, please return here next week and beyond: We hope to post pictures from the Gala and video of Mr. Kline's speech. We also hope to have more on yesterday's news conference at which Mr. Kline also attended.
Despite what many consider down times in Virginia (and America) for conservatism and traditional, Christian values in the public realm, last night's overwhelming outpouring of support, enthusiam and dedication to cause proves that our philosophy of limited government, liberty and protection of the family still resonates and thrives.
We sincerely cannot thank adequately enough all of you great Virginians who continue to support The Family Foundation of Virginia throughout the year with your time, financial contributions, counsel, steadfast encouragement in good times and bad, and for all manners of support you provide. Most of all, we deeply appreciate your constant prayers for us and our mission. Please know we reciprocate those prayers to all of you.
De-Fund Planned Parenthood Of Taxpayer MoneyNov. 20, 2008
Remarks of Victoria Cobb, President of The Family Foundation of Virginia

Planned Parenthood Funding Press Conference
Thank you for being here today.
As we prepare for another General Assembly session, we know the opposition we will face — and we know that the most well funded and organized opposition will be that of Planned Parenthood.
This national political behemoth had an income in Fiscal Year 2006 of more than $1 billion. Incredibly, nearly one-third of that income comes from the taxpayers of America. In its last annual report Planned Parenthood reported over $330 million in government — taxpayer — grants.
What is this money being used for?
While Planned Parenthood would like us to believe that its all for health care, nothing could be further from the truth.
Planned Parenthood is the largest private provider of abortion in the United States, performing more than one quarter of all abortions. As the national abortion rate has gradually declined in recent years, Planned Parenthood's abortion number continues to grow by double digits. Nearly $100 million of their income is from abortion. But by counting other services that are done along with an abortion, such as a pregnancy test and contraception, as separate services, Planned Parenthood is able to downplay the fact that abortion is its number one medical service, and their number one goal.
It is an organization that has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on elections, targeting those elected officials who dare stand for the principle of life. It is led by Cecile Richards, the former chief of staff for current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a fierce partisan with deep ties to the Democrat party.
It is an organization that is working everyday to end abstinence education in our schools despite the widespread support of abstinence education by parents, replacing it with their own agenda, a so-called comprehensive sex education program that we believe results in more kids engaging in risky behaviors, more sexually transmitted diseases among our teenagers, more teenage pregnancy and yes, more abortions — from which they profit.
It has fought against every effort to involve parents in their children's health care decisions.
It is an organization that supports the barbarity of partial birth abortion. An organization that fears beyond imagination the thought that a woman contemplating an abortion might have the opportunity to view an ultrasound of their unborn child.
It is an organization that has been accused of criminal activity. Former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, who has joined us today, charged them with 107 criminal counts — 23 felonies and 84 misdemeanors — for unlawful late-term abortions and other abortion-related crimes. Kline's evidence comes from subpoenaed medical records that indicate that Planned Parenthood in Johnson County, Kansas willfully neglected to report instances of child rape, forged viability reports, and performed illegal late-term abortions. Further, a district court judge in Kansas testified that he believed Planned Parenthood produced forged documents in response to subpoena.
As a result of those charges, Planned Parenthood and abortion proponents spent millions of dollars to take Phill out of office, something that were successful at doing. Consequently, the illegal activities in Kansas continue. Despite the fact that every judge who reviewed the case found probably cause, Planned Parenthood was able to delay any real court action to this point.
Should those charges ever be proved in a court of law anywhere in the country, Planned Parenthood stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding. The citizens of Virginia should not have to wait for that day.
For several years The Family Foundation and our many pro-family partners have been working to put an end to taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood in Virginia. This year we came ever so close and for the first time had budget language pass both the House and Senate that would have done just that, only to see the language stripped in conference committee negotiations.
Virginia taxpayers should not be asked to subsidize the activities of the nation's largest private abortion provider. They should not be asked to subsidize their political activities. They should not be asked to subsidize the actions of an organization that operates under a cloud of suspicion and scandal.
As the General Assembly once again works to correct a bloated budget, with a deficit of nearly $3 billion, every potential cut needs to be reviewed. Taxpayers of Virginia deserve better than to be asked to subsidize Planned Parenthood.
Today, we are once again calling for the end of taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. When the General Assembly reconvenes in January, we will work to include in the budget language that prevents taxpayers in Virginia from being asked to subsidize the nation's most extreme abortion organization.
Your Federal And State Tax Dollars At Work: Funding Planned ParenthoodNov. 20, 2008
Today we had a news conference to call the public's attention to the outrageousness that is the government funding of Planned Parenthood with your, our, everyone's tax dollars in Virginia and federally, and calling for all levels of government to strip this company of its funding. Gee, with both the Virginia and federal budgets in such great shape, yeah, why not throw several hundred million hard-earned tax dollars to an organization that reported more than one billion dollars of income in Fiscal Year 2006, of which about a third came from us? We'll have a lot more to say about this in the future, but because of time restraints (gotta get over to the Gala) we are posting the news release we issued today on the issue. Following this post will be Family Foundation of Virginia President Victoria Cobb's statement at the press conference.
Family Foundation Urges Defunding of Planned Parenthood
- Former Kansas AG addresses press conference -
RICHMOND - The Family Foundation of Virginia today urged the General Assembly to pass budget amendments that would prohibit taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. Former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline and former Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Claude Allen joined the pro-family organization at a capitol press conference.
"While Planned Parenthood would like us to believe that its all for health care, nothing could be further from the truth," said Victoria Cobb, President of The Family Foundation. "Virginia taxpayers should not be asked to subsidize the activities of the nation's largest private abortion provider. They should not be asked to subsidize their partisan political activities. They should not be asked to subsidize the actions of an organization that operates under a cloud of suspicion and scandal. As the General Assembly once again works to correct a bloated budget, with a deficit of nearly $3 billion, every potential cut needs to be considered. Taxpayers of Virginia deserve better than to be asked to help finance Planned Parenthood."
For several years The Family Foundation and other pro-family organizations have been working to end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood in Virginia. This year for the first time budget language passed both the House and Senate that would have done that, but the language was stripped in conference committee negotiations.
Planned Parenthood is the largest private provider of abortion in the United States, performing more than one quarter of all abortions. As the national abortion rate has gradually declined in recent years, Planned Parenthood's abortion number continues to increase by double digits. At least $100 million of their income is from abortion.
According to Cobb, Planned Parenthood is an organization that has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on elections, targeting pro-life elected officials. It is led by Cecile Richards, the former chief of staff for current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a fierce partisan with deep ties to the Democrat party.
Cobb added that Planned Parenthood is an organization that has been accused of criminal activity. Former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline charged them with 107 criminal counts — 23 felonies and 84 misdemeanors — for unlawful late-term abortions and other abortion-related crimes. Despite the fact that every judge who reviewed the case found probably cause, Planned Parenthood has been able to delay any real court action to this point.
Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37, Fairfax) said in a written statement, "Earlier this year, I introduced a budget amendment during the General Assembly session to deny taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood. The nation's largest abortion provider does not need or deserve our hard-earned tax dollars.
"While my amendment passed the State Senate, funding was later restored during the legislative process. Even though this attempt to cut off Planned Parenthood failed, it was a good first step. We learned what is needed to stop Planned Parenthood from living off the taxpayers while hurting our families.
"The General Assembly reconvenes in January and our economy is in a downturn. It's going to be very hard for Planned Parenthood to justify taxpayer subsidies while the Commonwealth is in the midst of a severe budget crisis."
"Should those charges ever be proved in a court of law anywhere in the country, Planned Parenthood stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding," added Cobb. "The citizens of Virginia should not have to wait for that day. We urge the General Assembly to pass a budget amendment in 2009 that protects taxpayers from subsidizing Planned Parenthood."
Planned Parenthood’s Congratulatory E-MailNov. 11, 2008
Planned Parenthood (see CNS.com article here), the nation's number one abortion provider (and recipient of your state and federal tax dollars), sent a congratulatory e-mail to its members last week. It is posted below, verbatim. After reading it, please consider joining us at The Family Foundation of Virginia Annual Gala, to be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 20, (more details here) at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Letter From Planned Parenthood To Its Supporters
From: Cecile Richards, President Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Subject: THIS IS WHAT IS FEELS LIKE
Dear xxxxxx,I've been wondering what it would feel like to know that the president of the United States supports women — it's been a while — and I must say, it feels amazing.
People around here are finally exhaling, after eight long years. Just think, the massive amount of time, energy, and resources that the Planned Parenthood community had to spend shielding women and teens from the harm caused by the Bush administration can now be directed to expanding women's access to the reproductive health information and services they urgently need.
Not only that, we also defeated anti-choice ballot initiatives by decisive margins in California, Colorado and South Dakota. Thank you so much for helping us protect women's reproductive rights this election — your support and the hard work of people in those states made the difference.
It's genuinely exciting to think about what we can achieve if we pull together. But we have to make a special commitment to one another. We have to pledge to seize our new opportunities with as much energy and tenacity as we've used to fend off the risks and challenges of the last eight years.
President-elect Obama said it so well last night, "This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were."
It's up to us to take up that challenge and urge Barack Obama to act on his deep commitment to women's health and reproductive freedom by reversing the global gag rule, restoring funding for UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and acting quickly to overturn any dangerous last-minute anti-choice regulations that the lame-duck Bush administration may seek to put in place. We'll be asking for your help on these issues soon.
Today, we are determined to turn the new climate of hope and possibility into real change for the women Planned Parenthood serves . . .
Imagine — being able to reach out to the generation of young women and teens that Bush administration policies have left without access to comprehensive sex education and affordable birth control.Imagine — reducing our tragically high rate of teen pregnancy and the disastrous spread of sexually transmitted infections, currently affecting at least one in four teenage girls in America.
Imagine — being able to help patients overcome rising barriers as more and more women turn to Planned Parenthood for their health care needs.
Yes, there's hard work ahead to achieve our vision for a healthier America and a healthier world for women. But making that vision a reality is now, happily, ecstatically, within our grasp.xxxxxx, I want to extend my gratitude to you. You stepped up when women were besieged from all sides by anti-choice hardliners, and you saw those women and Planned Parenthood through every challenge. Thank you.
Cecile Richards, President Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Special Guests ConfirmedNov. 07, 2008
There are only a few days remaining to make your reservation for the Family Foundation of Virginia's Annual Gala Celebration on Thursday, November 20. Making it that much more of a can't miss event, today we confirmed some special guests will join us in addition to our keynote speaker, former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline (see video here). The special guests are several of the Virginia State Police chaplains who resigned when ordered not to pray "in Jesus name." They will lead the blessing "in Jesus name." Like Phill Kline (see video here), these chaplains have paid a personal price in not compromising their beliefs. We hope you will be in attendance to show your support.
To make reservations for the gala, please contact The Family Foundation at 804.343.0010 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. Tickets are $85 per person or $165 per couple. Sponsorship opportunities also are available. You also may access a printable order form online by clicking here. Completed forms can be mailed to:

With Tuesday's election results, it is normal to feel down and depressed. By joining us at The Family Foundation's annual Gala you will find reasons and inspiration to stay involved: One of the most inspirational politicians of our day, Phill Kline. If you are cynical or weary of politicians who are afraid to stand for truth, then you need to hear Phill Kline's story. He's not the tired, wishy-washy-style "leader" willing to claim our values behind closed doors but who never hear mentions them in public. When you hear Phill Kline, you will know there are those in public life who mean and do what they say. It's refreshing and gives real reason for hope.
Last year, in the aftermath of statewide elections where liberals swept into power in the Virginia Senate, nearly 600 people from across the Commonwealth attended our Gala and left re-motivated and re-energized. We need that kind of inspiration this year, and the Gala is just where you will hear it. Join hundreds of other pro-God, pro-life, and pro-family Virginians at the Greater Richmond Convention Center on Thursday, November 20.
Out of town guests may get a significantly discounted group rate hotel room. Please call to inquire of availability.

Family Foundation Gala Preview: See Phill Kline Right To Life SpeechNov. 05, 2008
The Family Foundation of Virginia's Annual Gala is November 20 in Richmond. We have, and will, continue to preview the event and our keynote speaker, former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline (see here), here all the way up to the event. We will post videos of him in interviews and speeches, and even an exclusive blog interview, so you will get an idea of how dynamic and inspiring his story is — a true reformer and passionate defender of life, he has fought for the truth at great political and personal cost. A real life William Wilberforce. Engendering hate and vile against him by radicals, he perseveres in his fight against the evils of Planned Parenthood. We hope you will be able to join us in Richmond on November 20. It will be an event you won't want to miss. Here's one reason why — how many politicians speak with this conviction?

Family Foundation Gala Set For November 20Oct. 17, 2008
The Family Foundation of Virginia's Annual Gala Celebration is only a few weeks away. This year's Gala is on Thursday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m., at the Greater Richmond Convention Center's Grand Ballroom. It is black tie optional and a private reception for event sponsors begins at 6:00. We are especially excited about our keynote speaker, Phill Kline. Last year, attendees were amazed at the presentation of Eric Metaxas, author of Amazing Grace: William Wiberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, the companion book to the critically acclaimed movie Amazing Grace. His talk about William Wilberforce set the stage for a real life Wilberforce at this year's event: Phill Kline.
For some hard core news junkies, Mr. Kline may be a familiar name, while most people probably are unfamiliar with him. But no one in American politics better represents our theme this year: "Principle Over Politics." Mr. Kline has faced dramatic political, personal and legal repercussions for his battles with Planned Parenthood, first as the attorney general of Kansas and now as a county prosecutor. He may be the foremost pro-life public official in America today and his commitment to expose Planned Parenthood's cover-up of illegal activities in Kansas truly is inspiring. Although it has cost him elections, Mr. Kline has not compromised his principles. To preview his talk, we will post here in the near future an interview we are going to conduct with him. We also will post some video of and about him, starting with one at the end of this page.
Tickets for the Gala are $85 per person or $165 per couple. Sponsorship opportunities also are available. To reserve your tickets or to become a sponsor, click here for a printable order form. (For more information about the Gala and articles about Mr. Kline, click here.) Completed forms can be mailed to:
The Family Foundation of Virginia One Capitol Square 830 East Main Street Suite 1201 Richmond, Virginia 23219
For those travelling a long distance, we have secured a significantly discounted group rate at a nearby hotel that will be guaranteed through October 30. For more information concerning tickets, sponsorship opportunities or hotel reservations, please contact Dan Thompson at (804) 343-0010 or e-mail email@example.com with "Gala Information Request" in the subject line.
We look forward to seeing you in Richmond on November 20. In the meantime, to give you a preview of what to expect, please view the video interview below with Phill Kline by Laura Ingraham on the Fox News Channel:
Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?Aug. 20, 2008
The Family Foundation of Virginia is very pleased to announce that former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, perhaps this nation's leading pro-life public official, someone who took on with vigor the pro-abortion forces in his state, will be the keynote speaker at our annual Gala, November 20, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. He is the cover story of this month's Citizen Magazine, a Focus on the Family publication. Phill Kline is one of the rare elected officials who puts principles over politics. He is a dynamic speaker with substance, driven by principle. He bravely took on Planned Parenthood in Kansas despite the opposition of very powerful forces and never backed down, despite great political cost to him. We are truly excited and fortunate to host him and hope everyone takes the opportunity to hear him. We'll have more information about the event, and more about Mr. Kline, in the coming days and weeks, but we wanted to give everyone as much advanced notice as possible.
When you hear him speak, you will understand why we are so excited. If you have not heard Phill Kline's story, or are unfamiliar with him, just do a little research (click here for his Web site). We know first hand. We heard him at a meeting in Colorado Springs this past year. He has a powerful message guaranteed to enlighten you on pro-family values as well as interest you with his personal message. Join The Family Foundation and hundreds of pro-family Virginians from around the Commonwealth for this annual Gala celebration. Together, we will rejoice over our past victories and re-energize for the battles yet to come.
Here's just what a sample of the very high praise Phill Kline has received:
"There are yet in America heroes emerging who speak great truths with simplicity, eloquence, and passion." - National Review
"A pro-life crusading DA whose efforts have placed Kansas as the epicenter of the abortion debate . . . the fiercest state battleground in the abortion wars." - Human Events
"... the Legislature's ‘chief tax slasher' during a period in which state taxes probably were reduced by more than at any time in Kansas history." - The Topeka Capital-Journal
See y'all in November!
