Whenever I’m sitting at a stoplight and notice a car in front of me with a “Coexist” bumper sticker, it’s typically a Prius, and more often than not there’s an Obama/Hillary/Bernie 20XX sticker plastered on the adjacent side. I just sort of smirk as I ponder the real meaning of this new age graphic while wondering about the philosophy of the free-spirited soul behind the wheel.  And being that I like freedom of thought, speech and expression as much as the next guy, more power to them. Have at it.

But these observations, as trivial as they may be, tell a bigger story, or several perhaps. One of them is unmistakable. Namely, that liberals and those who support liberal politicians are usually the people who are most outspoken about the need for “diverse” groups to “coexist” in harmony with one another. “Tolerance”, “diversity”, “equality”, “live and let live”, - these are all mantras that define their outlook.

Ironically, this week we’re watching what is only the most recent example of the people and institutions who typically embrace those concepts seemingly throwing them all to the wind when it comes certain groups and certain beliefs. In this case, it’s pastors, religious organizations, and beliefs from the Bible. (Wait, time out: Review Picture Above)

This week, the NFL openly threatened to boycott Atlanta as a venue for next year’s Super Bowl if the Governor of Georgia signs a bill which merely affirms that pastors may not be forced to perform same-sex “wedding” ceremonies and that religious organizations cannot be forced to provide services that violate their faith.  An NFL spokesperson said in a statement, “NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard.”

So…what about the part about RELIGION??? (Conspicuously right before “sexual orientation”) For that matter, what’s that about “tolerance”, “inclusiveness” and “[non]discrimination”? If you’re confused, you’re not alone.

But amazingly, the NFL wasn’t the only one with such a threat. Many major corporations (including Apple, Warner Bros., CNN, and HBO), Hollywood film executives, and now Walt Disney Co., have threatened a boycott of the entire state of Georgia over this less-than-modest religious liberty protection.

Disney Co. said this is a statement: “Disney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law.”

All this strong-arming in the name of “nondiscrimination”. Or, stated another way: coexistence.

In the immortal words of Inigo from the movie “The Princess Bride”, I don’t think that word means what you think it means. If these liberal bullies really believed in coexistence, they would be every bit as committed to standing up for the rights of people of faith who simply don’t want to be forced to violate their duty to their God by participating in the celebration of that which they find sinful.

Clearly, peaceful coexistence is not what many cultural or political liberals have in mind. But tolerance is a two-way street. Coexistence requires a little give and take on the part of every group. In a free society, ideas will oftentimes come into conflict. These liberals should embrace true diversity instead of using bully tactics to silence and scourge those with whom they disagree, and in the process, the best ideas will inevitably rise to the top based on their own merit. Wouldn’t we all be better off in such a world?

If all of these giant corporations are so committed to destroying religious liberty in the name of so-called nondiscrimination for lifestyles which are built on lies and prone to destruction, then perhaps the state of Georgia ought to sign that bill John Hancock style, with a “P.S. Good Riddance. We’ll keep our freedom. You keep your ‘tolerance’.”
